Fortunately, a group of enthusiasts called Team ZOiT has developed a solution that allows you to run Lego Mindstorms Vision Command on Windows XP. They have created a patch that fixes the compatibility issues and adds some new features, such as support for multiple webcams, improved image processing and enhanced robot programming.
In this article, we will show you how to install and use Lego Mindstorms Vision Command on Windows XP using the Team ZOiT patch. You will need the following items:
A Lego Mindstorms Robotics Invention System (RIS) 2.0 set
A Lego Mindstorms Vision Command set
A webcam that is compatible with Windows XP
A computer running Windows XP with a CD-ROM drive and a USB port
The original Lego Mindstorms Vision Command CD-ROM
The Team ZOiT patch, which you can download from their website
Follow these steps to install and use Lego Mindstorms Vision Command on Windows XP:
Install the Lego Mindstorms RIS 2.0 software from the CD-ROM that came with your set. Follow the instructions on the screen and reboot your computer when prompted.
Connect your webcam to your computer and install the drivers if necessary. Make sure your webcam works properly before proceeding.
Insert the Lego Mindstorms Vision Command CD-ROM into your computer and copy the entire contents of the CD-ROM to a folder on your hard drive. For example, you can create a folder called C:\\VisionCommand and copy all the files from the CD-ROM to that folder.
Download the Team ZOiT patch from their website and unzip it to a folder on your hard drive. For example, you can create a folder called C:\\VisionPatch and unzip all the files from the patch to that folder.
Open the folder where you unzipped the patch and run the file called Patch.exe. A window will appear asking you to select the folder where you copied the Vision Command files from the CD-ROM. For example, if you copied them to C:\\VisionCommand, select that folder and click OK.
The patch will apply some changes to the Vision Command files and create a shortcut on your desktop called \"Lego Mindstorms Vision Command\". You can use this shortcut to launch the patched version of Vision Command.
Connect your RIS 2.0 tower to your computer using the USB cable that came with your set. Turn on your RIS 2.0 brick and make sure it is connected to your computer.
Launch Vision Command using the shortcut on your desktop. You will see a welcome screen with some options. Click on \"Create\" to start creating your own robot programs.
You will see a window with four tabs: Camera, Image Processing, Robot Control and Program. You can use these tabs to capture images from your webcam, apply filters and effects, control your robot's motors and sensors, and create sequences of commands for your robot.
Have fun experimenting with different combinations of image processing and robot control commands. You can also load some sample programs from the CD-ROM or from the patch folder to get some inspiration.
