The Plot of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The film begins with a flashback to 1912, where a young Indiana Jones (played by River Phoenix) discovers a group of treasure hunters stealing a valuable cross from a cave in Utah. He tries to stop them and claim the cross for a museum, but ends up in a chase that involves a circus train, a snake pit, and a whip. He manages to escape with the cross, but is forced to give it up to the leader of the treasure hunters, who turns out to be his future nemesis, Fedora (Richard Young).
The film then jumps to 1938, where Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is teaching archaeology at Barnett College. He is approached by Walter Donovan (Julian Glover), a wealthy businessman and collector, who shows him an ancient tablet that contains clues to the location of the Holy Grail, the cup that Jesus Christ used at the Last Supper and that is said to grant eternal life. Donovan reveals that he has been sponsoring an expedition led by Indianas father, Henry Jones Sr. (Sean Connery), a renowned Grail scholar, but that he has lost contact with him. He asks Indiana to find his father and the Grail.
Indiana travels to Venice, Italy, where he meets Dr. Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody), an Austrian art historian who was working with Henry. Together, they discover a hidden catacomb beneath a library that contains a mural depicting the Knights of the First Crusade and another clue to the Grails location. They also encounter a secret society called the Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword, who are sworn to protect the Grail from being found. They escape from them and head to Henrys hotel room, where they find his diary, which contains his research on the Grail.
However, they are ambushed by Nazi agents, who reveal that Donovan and Elsa are working for them and have kidnapped Henry. Indiana and Elsa manage to flee with the diary and board a boat, but are pursued by the Nazis and the Brotherhood. Indiana fights them off and escapes with Elsa on a biplane. They fly to Brunwald Castle on the Austrian-German border, where Henry is being held.
